IUI

IUI is one of the most commonly discussed fertility treatments, but many couples do not know what it actually involves.

What is IUI?

IUI stands for intrauterine insemination. In this procedure, prepared sperm are placed inside the uterus around the time of ovulation to improve the chance of sperm reaching the egg.

When is IUI used?

IUI may be considered in selected situations such as:

  • mild male-factor infertility
  • ovulation-related infertility after treatment
  • unexplained infertility
  • some cervical-factor situations

When is IUI not the best option?

It may be less useful when:

  • the fallopian tubes are blocked
  • sperm problems are severe
  • IVF is clearly more appropriate
  • there are other advanced fertility factors present

How is IUI usually done?

In simple terms:

1. the cycle is monitored

2. ovulation may be supported with medication

3. semen is prepared in the lab

4. the prepared sample is placed in the uterus near ovulation

Is it painful?

Most women describe IUI as a brief procedure with mild discomfort rather than severe pain.

Does one cycle guarantee pregnancy?

No. Success depends on:

  • age
  • ovulation
  • sperm quality
  • tubal status
  • diagnosis
  • timing of treatment

When to see a doctor

IUI should be considered only after a proper fertility evaluation has shown that it is a reasonable next step.

Final word

IUI is not for everyone, but in the right couple it can be a useful and relatively simple treatment.

Dr. Meenakshi Charaya offers guided IUI planning with proper evaluation, cycle timing, and clear counseling so couples understand both the process and realistic expectations.
